Aslama and Welcome to Hammamet!
Hammamet is one of the top beach resorts in North Africa, and a favourite with visitors to Tunisia. It is the most important part of the ‘Tunisian Riviera' and attracts visitors with its historic medina, beautiful beaches, rejuvenating mineral baths and fine Hammamet hotels of excellent standards.
The fine weather and beauty of Hammamet attract visitors all year long.
Hammamet is wedged between the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara Desert on the coastal motorway, 64 km south of Tunis. This was just a laidback coastal village before it turned into a stylish resort thanks to the affluent holidayers from Europe and America who made it their favourite getaway around the 1920s. Hammamet derives its name from al-hammamat in Arabic meaning ‘the baths'. There is much to see and do in Hammamet, with its beautiful beaches and pretty town with a fort complete with fortifications surrounding the historic Medina.
You will find an eclectic mix of tourists casually strolling the streets of Hammamet speaking English, Dutch, French and German. Hammamet still has its heritage intact in spite of its brush with modern lifestyle. This is evident when you pass by the Medina area, where traders carry their ware on donkey-backs, be it brass and leather curios, jewellery, kaftans or even carpets. As you walk through the narrow lanes you will see beautifully patterned doors protecting windowless, sparklingly whitewashed houses. The famous baths popular even in the Roman era are located right in the crowded Medina area, near the Kasbah (Medieval castle) and the ancient mosque. A Hammamet tour of the Medina is one of the highlights of a visit to the town.
Another highlight of this coastal town is the long shore of 10 km dotted with palm trees and unpolluted sandy beaches with fishing boats lined up. If you go down south, there are plenty of new, stylish Hammamet hotels based on the Moorish, low-rise architecture. Apart from lavish rooms and suites, they have a great ambience, fine-dining restaurants and also provide water-sports and other activities. Use our Hammamet map to choose your hotel in Hammamet based on its location and ensure you find the perfect spot on the coast.
Most of the hotels in Hammamet are directly on the beach, the new resort of Hammamet yasmine grouping more that forty Hammamet hotels all of them 4 and 5 stars are however built on a common coast road, with Nabeul the first touristic resort of Tunisia. The Governorate of Nabeul is on the south-east of the northern peninsula, Cap Bon. This part of the Gulf of Hammamet is popular for jasmine flowers. You can find souvenirs made out of jasmine everywhere in Hammamet.
The Medina, vibrant souqs and whitewashed houses all represent the grand past and heritage of Hammamet. You can make Hammamet a base to visit nearby places of interest like Tunis, the ruins of Carthage and also undertake adventurous Hammamet tours and safaris into the Sahara. The walled town dating back to the 15th century is a prime area of Hammamet. As you stroll along the wall, you can view the splendid Mediterranean Sea. The Medina was protected in the medieval times by the Kasbah. You can buy carpets, jewellery, brassware and many Tunisian handicrafts at a good bargain in the souq. The Medina or the old city still resonates with the charm of the royal times with its characteristic scenes.
You can head to the traditional bath houses for some leisure. Hammamet also has some good golf courses. There is an amphitheatre built in Greek style at the International Culture Centre of Hammamet, which by itself is a prominent place in the town. This centre plays host to the annually held International Cultural Festival of Hammamet. The festival is marked by a variety of live entertainment and Arabian music. An art exhibition is also held in this centre.
Hammamet is fondly known as the Tunisian Saint Tropez by tourists who enjoy soaking up the sun on clean beaches followed by a fun swim, dinner by the sea, wonderful nightlife followed by a night time swim, dazzling sun rises and much more, making them come back year after year.
