Getting to Hammamet

The important airports in Tunisia are Monastir, Djerba and Tunis (Carthage). Monastir is in the south and Tunis is in the north (in the capital city). If you happen to arrive at Monastir without a pre-booked transfer, you will find yourself swarmed by taxi drivers grabbing at your luggage, offering it to be carried up to the cab (at a cost of course)! Though this might be unnerving, refuse and hold on to your luggage. The best way is to hire a private taxi - the drive to Hammamet from Monstir should cost you about 80 TD and takes about an hour.

By Road

Yasmin Hammamet is an hour's drive (70 km) from both the international airports, Tunis Carthage and Monastir. From here, you just need to take the local Tunisian transport to get to Hammamet.

By Boat

The vast majority of European visitors come to Hammamet by air, but there's also good connection with ferry boats from Genes in Italy or Marseille in France. There are four boats a week and the trip lasts 24 hours with good quality boats making the crossing of the Mediterranean sea. It is good for those who prefer to bring their car, or bus groups who want to explore Carthage by the sea. The harbour is 70 km away from Hammamet.

Getting around Hammamet

The best way to explore this ancient city is by walking. You can take a louage ride too. However, taxis or buses will be more convenient if you want to get around within the city. The Noddy train for tourists runs from the Medina to the distant resort of Yasmine Hammamet. The train station is a hub to catch trains going to other towns in Tunisia.

By Taxi

Go in for taxis, buses or hired cars for heavy duty travelling in Hammamet where you need to cover more than one place. Taxis are always available and cheaper but ensure that you decide on the cost mutually, so that there are no unpleasant arguments with the driver once you reach your destination.

By Bus

Though the buses are rickety and worn out, they are very reliable. The bus station in Hammamet is located right next to the tourist office, which has the time-tables for the buses. You can also get information on transportation, Hammamet hotels and places of interest at the tourist office.
